Saint Anthony Falls, the Falls of Saint Anthony, northeast of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the only natural major waterfall on the Upper Mississippi River. The natural falls were replaced by a concrete overflow spillway after it partially collapsed in 1869. The spillway was built by the Army Corps of Engineers and effectively eliminated the natural beauty of the falls. However, the area surrounding the falls has been developed into a popular tourist attraction, including the Minneapolis Museum of Modern Art which sits adjacent to the former waterfall site. Visitors can still admire the power of the Mississippi River and learn about the history of Saint Anthony Falls at this iconic location.
